We have incredible pictures from both disasters and an eyewitness account of that killer wave. Plus, is distracted driving– like texting or talking on the phone– worse than driving drunk? We’ll look at whether distracted drivers deserve jail time. We want to hear what you have to say. Here are a few guidelines: Wednesday's Political HeadlinesPosted: 05:42 PM ET
President Obama huddled with his national security team this afternoon to talk about strategy for the war in Afghanistan. White House Press secretary Robert Gibbs is blasting House Minority Whip Eric Cantor for saying the president is endangering U.S. troops by not deciding his Afghanistan strategy quickly enough. Gibbs called it, "a bunch of game playing." ![]() First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Copenhagen, Denmark, today to lobby for the Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. President Obama heads there tomorrow. Vice president Joe Biden's son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, is home from his brigades' deployment in Iraq. The Senate Finance Committee today rejected a Republican bid to tighten federal restrictions on abortion as part of health care reform. The Transportation Department is sponsoring a two-day-long summit on the dangers of distracted driving. Health Care Reform: Know How Many Choices You’ll Have?Posted: 05:13 PM ET
By Joe Von Kanel President Obama often talks about his goal of allowing people currently without insurance to be able to go to a “national exchange” where they can choose from a variety of insurance options. But do you know how many choices you’ll have? Only four, according to the bipartisan bill currently in the Senate Finance committee. ![]() In descending order of how much they cover (and cost) they’re designated Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. A Platinum plan would cover 90% of covered medical expenses. You’d have to pay the other 10% out of your own pocket A Gold plan covers 80%; Silver 70% and Bronze 65% Today the Finance Committee narrowly turned aside a Republican effort to make the Bronze plan more affordable for younger, healthy people by lowering how much it would cover – from 65% to 60%. Senators were told today that a Bronze plan would cost about $323 a month. The health reform bill contains tax credits to help people afford the monthly premiums but Republicans complained that the credits were geared to the more-expensive “Silver” plan. By Joe Von Kanel During today’s daily briefing, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs a question about the administration’s Iran strategy. Only the reporter asked, “From the standpoint of leverage or strategery, how do you, how do you get Iran to that place…” That was as far as she got. Gibbs interrupted her and as the other reporters giggled he said, “I love it that a Saturday Night Live word has just entered into the lexicon of our briefing.” Then he deadpanned, “I’m going to curse in a minute, if that’s cool.” That last comment, of course, is a reference to a SNL cast member dropping the “f-bomb” on last Saturday’s show.
