In Savannah, Georgia today, President Obama announced rebates of $1,500 to $3,000 for people who make their homes more energy efficient.

It’s primary day in Texas - highlighted by a three-way race for the Republican nomination for governor. There will be a runoff if nobody gets above fifty percent of the vote.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown announced he's running for governor. He served two terms in the 70's and '80s. At his announcement, Brown said, “What we need is someone with insider's knowledge but an outsider's mind.”

A new poll in Pennsylvania shows Democratic Senator Arlen Specter leading Republican challenger Pat Toomey 49 to 42 percent. That’s up from a 44 percent tie in December.

Colorado governor Bill Ritter is said to be in good spirits even though he broke several ribs in a bicycle accident this morning.

President Obama highlighted his administration's push to lower high school dropout rates. At his appearance at an event at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Obama said, “About twelve percent of America’s schools produce fifty percent of America’s dropouts. We’re going to focus on helping states and school districts turn around their five-thousand lowest performing schools in the next five years.”

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Uruguay, her first stop on a six-nation tour of Latin America. Tomorrow she visits Chile, which is now asking for international help in the wake of this weekend's earthquake.

Tomorrow is primary day in Texas. Most of the attention is on the Republican contest for governor. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is challenging governor Rick Perry, who has embraced an anti-Washington message and has a double-digit lead in recent polls.

Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter - who also says Washington is broken– today announced he's challenging Senator Blanche Lincoln in their state's democratic primary.

New York governor David Paterson today changed his mind about seeking reelection this year, but he isn't resigning. Recent news reports suggest New York’s state police and the governor, himself, may have pressured a woman to keep quiet about a domestic violence incident involving one of Paterson’s top aides. At a press conference today, Paterson stated, “I give you this personal oath: I have never abused my office, not now, not ever.”

White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers is stepping down next month. She was the target of criticism after a security lapse allowed a pair of reality TV hopefuls to crash a White House state dinner.

The House Ethics Committee is formally admonishing New York Democratic Congressman Charles Rangel for violating rules about accepting gifts.

A family judge has granted Jenny Sanford’s request for a divorce from her husband, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford effective in March.

President Obama's health care summit produced lots of talk, but not much compromise. Democratic sources privately tell CNN the Obama administration's new goal is to pass health care reform by the end of March.

Senator McCain accepted a challenge from his Republican primary opponent in Arizona, former congressman J.D. Hayworth, to take part in 10 debates.

in Florida’s U.S. Senate race, conservative Republican Marco Rubio is claiming dirty politics after a leak showed he made personal purchases with the state party's credit card. Rubio blames the leak on his opponent, moderate Republican governor Charlie Crist.

Former president Bush visited Dick Cheney today. Cheney is home recovering from a mild heart attack.

Wednesday's political headlines

This afternoon, Toyota president Akio Toyoda told a congressional committee that Toyota will fix the acceleration problems that forced millions of recalls.

Business leaders got a pep talk from President Obama today. At a Business Roundtable event, President Obama said, “We need an economy where we generate more jobs here at home and send more products overseas. We need to invest and nurture the industries of the future.”

Sen. Scott Brown, R-Massachusetts, voted Wednesday for the Senate jobs bill.

The U.S. Senate passed a jobs bill 70 to 28. Eight Republicans who voted against the bill on Monday voted for it today.

House Republican Leader John Boehner is complaining that governors and state legislators won't be invited to tomorrow's White House summit on health care reform.

Dick Cheney is out of the hospital. A spokesman says he's "feeling good" and will resume his normal schedule shortly despite his fifth heart attack.

Civil rights leaders met with President Obama today to talk about jobs and the economy.

Two more members of Congress aren't seeking re-election:Eight-term Michigan Republican Vernon Ehlers is a strong supporter of science programs and three democratic sources tell CNN that California representative Diane Watson will retire at the end of the year.

Former Texas Congressman Charles Wilson died today. The book and movie "Charlie Wilson's War" are based on his efforts to support U.S. secret operations against the Russians in Afghanistan.

Two new national polls show a majority of Americans want terror suspects to be tried in military rather than civilian courts.

New Senator Scott Brown plans to write a book about his life story.

Tuesday Political Headlines

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the military is getting ready for the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell."

Senator John McCain says "now" isn't the time, “at this moment of immense hardship for our armed services, we should not be seeking to overturn the ‘don't ask, don't tell policy’.”

President Obama held a town hall meeting in New Hampshire this afternoon. He said “jobs has to be our number one focus in 2010.”

A White House spokesman says the President intends to meet with the Dalai Lama, even though China warns it will harm U.S./Chinese relations.

It's primary day in Illinois, with competitive races in both parties for governor, the U.S. Senate and several congressional seats.

Monday political headlines

President Obama is informing top diplomatic and military leaders about his new Afghanistan strategy and has already issued orders putting it into effect. His decision will be made public tomorrow night.

The President still has "full confidence" in the Secret Service, despite the slip-up that allowed an unvited couple into last week's state dinner. The couple and the director of the Secret Service have been called to testify before Congress on Thursday.

The U.S. Senate is back in session debating Health Care reform.

The Supreme Court today ordered a lower court to take another look at its decision allowing the release of photos of U.S. troops abusing Afghan and Iraqi detainees. A new law allows defense secretaries to keep such photos secret.

Bill and Hillary Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, is engaged. Her wedding is next summer.

Friday's political headlines

The U.S. Senate is spending all day today debating whether they want to debate health care reform. Republicans like Mitch McConnell are highlighting the bill's length and complexity.
McConnell said, "We've now had less than 48 hours to look through this 2,074 page bill."

Democrats such as Dick Durbin are focusing on what they call "abuses" by health insurance companies. Durban said, "We should not allow these health insurance companies to turn you down for a pre-existing condition just because you get sick."

The Senate Ethics Committee issued a letter admonishing Senator Roland Burris of Illinois - saying he should have known he was providing incorrect or misleading information about his appointment to fill Barack Obama's senate seat, but Burris won't face any legal action.

President Obama is back from his eight-day trip to Asia, but has no public events today.
